Daniel Boone Trail Markers
Description:
This category is to locate and share those historical markers placed over a 25 year period in an effort to help improve road conditions and memorialize Daniel Boone's trail blazing efforts and to stir the imaginations of civic leaders and school children, raising funds, placing metal tablets on arrowhead shaped monuments, leading the ceremonies and issuing press releases.
Expanded Description:
The force behind the Boone Trail Markers was Joseph Hampton Rich (1874-1949), a graduate of Wake Forest in the class of 1898. This was the same year that the Battleship Maine was sunk in Havana Harbor, Cuba, and the Spanish-American War began, a pivotal time for Mr. Rich. He had several careers: teaching in public school; representing the Institute of Heraldry of Washington, DC; preaching in churches (he attended seminary in Kentucky) and operating the Piedmont Print Company in Winston-Salem. He ended his career as Clerk Librarian of the North Carolina State Senate.
He chose to celebrate Daniel Boone's trail because of its contribution to the settlement of mid-America by way of the Boone Trail and because he was captivated by "the pioneer spirit" of that era. Rich united history with the need for highway enhancements from the North Carolina to Tennessee, West Virginia and Kentucky and as far as the West Coast where he erected more than 100 monuments.

A feature of a number of the monuments (including Blowing Rock's) was a bear. Was this to commemorate the popular words found on a tree: "D. Boone killed a bear here," or could the bear have been a symbol of nature and wilderness, or the likening of Daniel Boone to the strength and fortitude of bears? This has never been made clear.

On the bottom of the Blowing Rock plaque under Daniel Boone's sculpted picture are the words "Metal From Battleship Maine in Tablet." This is because Rich went to Washington in 1916 to get a sculptor to model the likeness of Daniel Boone in relief. During this process, he thought it might be very special to get some historic metal from the government to cast into the tablet. When the Honorable Charley Mc Veagh and Franklin Roosevelt, then Assistant Secretary of the Navy, were told of Rich's plan to celebrate Daniel Boone's heritage, they ordered 400 pounds of old metal taken from around the gun carriages of the USS Maine, giving directions that it be "pigged" up and ready for the foundry. Rich picked up the metal and took it to the foundry in Baltimore where the tablets were made. The monuments also achieved the purpose of honoring the 266 men who lost their lives when America's largest battleship of the day was sunk in 1898 and "Remember the Maine" was the slogan of the time.

After six years of research, a new book entitled, Rich Man: Daniel Boone, describes in 13 chapters, and 323 pages, the biography of Mr. Rich, his
objectives for the Boone Trail Highway, its connection with the BattleshipMaine (each metal marker was made with salvage from the famousbattleship), how the Boy Scouts related, plus the documentation on the 135 known
original sites, and photos of the 46 surviving monuments, and a wealth of historicand related material.
