Olympic Memorabilia
Managed By: Icon Here Goin' for Gold
Description:
This Waymark Category is for recording Olympic Memorabilia throughout the world. This includes Memorabilia of the Olympic Games and the many Olympians who competed during the Modern Olympic Games, including the Modern Paralympic Games.
Expanded Description:

Since the advent of the Modern Olympic Games in 1896, nearly every continent has hosted (or is scheduled to host) this world-wide event. As of 2012, there have been a total of 49 official Olympic Games, (27 Summer Games hosted by 22 different cities, with 21 Winter Games hosted by 18 different cities). In addition, the following games were cancelled due to war: Berlin (S) 1916, Tokyo (S) and Sapporo (W) in 1940, and London (S) and Cortina d'Ampezzo (W) in 1944.

Europe has hosted the most games (28), followed by North America (12), Asia (5), Australia (2). South America will host its first games in 2016, when Rio de Janeiro hosts the Summer Games.Since the advent of the Modern Olympic Games in 1896, nearly every continent has hosted (or is scheduled to host) this world-wide event. The Winter and Summer Paralympic Games are held immediately following the respective Olympic Games. The Paralympic Games involves athletes with a range of physical and intellectual disabilities; including mobility disabilities, amputations, blindness, cerebral palsy, and other disabilities.

Any further mention of Olympic Games and Olympians in this category, implies the inclusion of the Paralympic Games and Paralympians, respectively.

While Olympic Games are hosted by a specific city, the individual venues, activities, and overall influence of the games can cover entire regions surrounding the host city. These games leave a legacy, not only in the venues used during the games, but in the many art pieces, monuments, markers, structures, collections, amenities and other memorabilia that remain long after the crowds have returned home.

Merriam-Webster defines Memorabilia as:

1: things that are remarkable and worthy of remembrance

2: things that stir recollection or are valued or collected for their association with a particular field or interest: MEMENTOS

A total of 206 countries participated in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. In order to truly make this a global category, we are not limiting submissions to Olympic venue cities, but will include Olympic Memorabilia found within any country that has either hosted or participated.

Let’s start with what we are NOT looking for in this category?

1. Olympic Competition Venues – regardless of whether they existed prior to the games or built specifically for the games; the Modern Olympic Venues category is already entirely devoted to them. Of course, any art pieces, historical markers, or other memorabilia on display at venue sites are open for submission. For clarification, if an historical marker is a memorial for the venue, you are free to waymark the marker – not the venue.

2. Personal collections, souvenirs, clothing, etc. that are not in a permanent, public, accessible location.

3. Generic public sculptures of athletes, or others, with no direct connection to the Modern Olympic Games; regardless of location.

4. Temporary Olympic stores selling Olympic souvenirs. For that matter, any Olympic souvenir display for sale at any retail outlet. These are inherently not a permanent display or permanent location.

5. Simple engravings, graphics, posters, stickers, license plates, etc, with likenesses of the Olympic rings, or individual host city logos. For example, logos on streets signs, logo engravings in the sidewalk, etc. The key word here is "simple". If you are unsure if your discovery is "simple", refer to the Merriam-Webster definition of Memorabilia above.

6. Business signs, stickers, etc, stating that a specific business is an "Official Sponsor of the Olympic Games".

7. Personal sighting of, or meeting with, an Olympian. While this might be exciting for you, it doesn't constitute memorabilia for this category. Besides, the Celebrity Hangouts category already has that covered.

Instructions for Posting a Olympic Memorabilia Waymark:

1. The waymark must be directly related to the Modern Olympic Games or an Olympian. Provide documentation, which can be from marker text, web site, book, or other verifiable source. Please cite your source(s).

2. The waymark must be of a permanent, accessible, public object, or collection of objects.

3. Waymarks for Olympians, please provide at least a brief biography of the Olympian.

4. Please include inscriptions, sign or marker text in the long description.

5. For memorabilia located within a building, such as a museum:

   a. Please take your location coordinates from outside the main entrance.

   b. For multiple displays, each with a specific theme or honoring a specific athlete, or group of athletes (such as a
basketball team or a bobsled team); each display can be waymarked separately.

   c. For the good of the game, submissions by any one waymarker are limited to five (5) displays in the same
      building.

   d. If a single display has multiple items present (multiple medals, or honoring multiple athletes), the display as a
whole, is considered as one waymark.

What are we looking for in this category?

1. Olympic Art (Statues, Sculptures, Murals, Mosaics, etc.), or Collections (Pin Collections, Medals, etc.)

2. Olympic Historical Markers, Monuments, etc.

3. Unique Commemorations of Olympic Athletes - For example, in the UK, during the 2012 London Olympics, a red Post Office Pillar Letter Box was painted Gold in each athlete's home town.

4. Birth Places and Childhood Homes of Olympians

   a. These must be a specific location, not a general area or a city; Paris, France is not a specific location.

   b. The location must have a marker or sign that advertises it as such. If there is no visible physical marker or sign
on the property, assume that it is not advertised (whether widely known or not) and respect the privacy of
the current residents. Therefore, no marker or sign, no waymark.

5. Headstones of Olympians - Please be respectful of time and place. Please be cognizant of the sensitivities that are required when visiting cemeteries or other resting places.

6. Olympic Non-Competition Venue Structures, (athlete villages, arches, bridges, decorative venue signage, plazas, countdown clocks, museums, etc.) - For athlete villages, unless separated geographically, multiple buildings in the same general area are considered one waymark.

Sources - If you use a source, whether Wikipedia or another source for your description, please use “quotes” for the information and cite your source(s). Please give credit where credit is due.

Photos - At least TWO original photos. Additional photos are greatly appreciated and will enhance the quality of your waymark. Of the TWO required photos one should provide a clear picture of the object or text, with the other taking in the general area of the memorabilia for reference. Where memorabilia is located indoors, please provide a THIRD picture of the building. Remember, we want your waymark to be easy as possible for others to visit.

LANGUAGE NOTE: We recognize waymarking as a global hobby and welcome waymarks from all countries. Because of our international scope, we also acknowledge ENGLISH as our lingua franca. English will create the highest level of accessibility globally. We encourage bilingual and multilingual waymarks, but one of the languages must be English.

Relying on software or internet based translators, such as Babylon and Google Translate, may NOT yield accurate translations that are intelligible. Use these only when there is no alternative. Although we do not expect grammatical perfection, a waymark may be declined if the English language is not understandable.

Instructions for Visiting a Waymark in this Category:

You must have visited the site in person, not online. Please post at least one original photo of the waymark and describe your visit and any recollections you may have from the games or athlete. It is not required to include your GPSr or yourself in the photo, but you are free to do so, if desired.
