Expanded Description:
Relief Art can be defined as the carving or sculpting of an otherwise flat surface to create a design or feature. Included within the realms of Relief Art Sculpture are; bas relief, high relief and sunken. This category aims to catalog relief art sculpture of all forms.

Bas Relief, pronounced 'bah ree-leef', is a French term derived from the Italian phrase 'basso-relievo', which translates in English to 'low relief'. Typically with bas relief the depth of a image is shallow, with the background very compressed or completely flat. Coins are generally good examples of bas relief.

High Relief, otherwise known as 'Alto-relievo', sculptures differs from Bas Relief due to the prominent feature within the sculpture are 'under-cut' or have at least 50% of the depth of the object projecting from the sculpture. 'Mount Rushmore', in the USA, is an example of high relief sculpture.

Sunken Relief, also known as intaglio or hollow-relief, sculptures have the reversed of the above two types, where the features are carved 'into', rather than protruding from the sculpture. Egyptian carved walls are good examples of sunken relief.

Only relief art specifically sculptured as pieces of artistic work and recognised historical reliefs will be excepted by this category.

Importantly, this category will only except relief art sculptures and relief art that is not defined as 'Frieze Art'. The 'Frieze Art' category can be found here http://www.waymarking.com/cat/details.aspx?f=1&guid=f0ee8bad-c786-4a4b-aedf-70964e8a0d54&gid=6 .
